Blue Monday

Blue Monday is typically considered to be the third Monday of January each year. It is often referred to as the most depressing day of the year, a concept that originated in a press release by a travel company in 2005. The term takes into account a combination of factors including post-Christmas blues, cold and dark winter weather, failing New Year's resolutions, and the arrival of monthly credit card bills.

Things a Manager Can Do to Support Staff on Blue Monday

Wellbeing Workshop: Organise a wellbeing workshop focused on mental health and stress management. Invite a mental health professional to provide practical advice on coping strategies, mindfulness techniques, and resources available for support. This can help staff feel more equipped to handle stress and improve their overall wellbeing.

Comfort Food Treats: Provide comforting treats such as hot drinks, pastries, or a healthy snack bar. Setting up a special treat station in the break room can give employees a little boost and make the day more enjoyable.

Encourage Breaks and Physical Activity: Promote the importance of taking regular breaks and getting some physical activity. Encourage short walks, stretching sessions, or even a group activity like a light exercise class. Physical activity can help lift moods and reduce stress.

Positive Vibes Campaign: Start a "Positive Vibes" campaign where employees can share uplifting messages, quotes, or stories. Create a bulletin board or a digital space where staff can post their contributions. This can foster a positive atmosphere and help counteract the negative connotations of Blue Monday.
